London: The United Kingdom has passed the ‘landmark’ Tobacco and Vapes Bill, a historic piece of legislation designed to create the nation's first smoke-free generation. The law makes it permanently illegal for retailers to sell tobacco to anyone born after January 1, 2009, effectively imposing a lifelong ban on today’s children and all future generations.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting hailed the move as a transformative moment for national health, stating that ‘prevention is better than cure.’ The government expects the ban to significantly reduce the burden on the NHS, as smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death and disability in the UK.
Beyond cigarettes, the bill grants ministers new powers to crack down on youth vaping by regulating flavors and packaging that appeal to children. It also expands smoke-free laws to include playgrounds, school perimeters, and cars carrying minors. While critics within the industry have raised concerns over the impact on retailers, health advocates like Asthma + Lung UK have praised the bill as a groundbreaking victory.
The legislation now moves to receive Royal Assent, setting a global precedent for tobacco control. While existing smokers can still purchase tobacco and use vapes in private homes or pub gardens, the law ensures that for the youth of Britain, the cycle of nicotine addiction stops here.
