US Judge Blocks Above-Ground Work on Trump White House Ballroom Amid Legal Battle

Washington DC: A federal judge in Washington, D.C. has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from carrying out above-ground construction on the proposed White House ballroom, a controversial $400 million project.
Judge Richard Leon ruled that while above-ground building must stop, limited underground work linked to national security can continue. He also allowed some above-ground work only if it is necessary to secure and protect those underground facilities.
The decision comes after concerns raised by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which is suing to stop the project. The group argues the construction requires congressional approval.
The Trump administration quickly appealed the ruling, saying the project is essential for security and would provide a safe meeting space for future leaders. Donald Trump criticised the judge in a social media post, calling the decision politically motivated.
Judge Leon rejected arguments that national security justified the entire project, saying security concerns do not give “a blank check” to proceed with construction. He also emphasized that the president is a steward of the White House, not its owner.
The legal dispute follows earlier court rulings that paused construction of the planned ballroom, which would replace the former East Wing of the White House.
