Jakarta: Eight people were killed after a helicopter crashed on Indonesia’s portion of Borneo while flying between palm oil plantations, authorities said Thursday.
The Airbus H130, operated by PT Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact around five minutes after taking off from Melawi District in the island’s interior.
It had been heading to Kubu Raya District on the western coast when communication was lost.
There were two crew members and six passengers on board. All eight were confirmed dead.
Search and rescue teams later located the wreckage in the dense forests of Sekadau District and recovered the bodies of the victims.
Indonesia, an archipelago heavily dependent on air travel, has experienced several aviation accidents in recent years.
In 2018, a passenger jet crashed into the sea, killing all 189 people on board. In 2021, another crash involving a Boeing 737-500 into the Java Sea claimed 62 lives.
Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the latest crash.
