CAPE TOWN: Following his election as the new leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA), Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has pledged to transform the party’s reputation. Succeeding John Steenhuisen, Hill-Lewis faces the primary challenge of shedding the DA’s image as a party that predominantly represents white interests.
He acknowledged a significant ‘trust deficit’ among Black voters and emphasized that the party must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the advancement of all South Africans to grow its national appeal.
While the DA remains critical of current race-based empowerment laws, Hill-Lewis clarified that this stance is not an opposition to Black progress, but rather a call for more effective, practical results. His leadership strategy focuses on increasing the party's presence in diverse communities to bridge racial divides. Ultimately, Hill-Lewis aims to maintain the stability of the current national coalition government while building the DA’s strength to eventually surpass the ANC in the 2029 elections.
