CANBERRA: Lieutenant General Susan Coyle has been appointed as the Chief of Army, marking the first time a woman will lead a military service in Australia's 125-year history. Defence Minister Richard Marles described the appointment as a ‘deeply historic moment,’ emphasizing that Coyle’s rise to the top fulfills the sentiment that ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’.
With a career spanning over three decades, Coyle has served in high-pressure environments including Afghanistan, the Solomon Islands, and the Middle East. Her leadership comes at a pivotal time as the Australian Army undergoes a major transformation, shifting focus toward modern combat tools such as drones, long-range firepower, and cyber-warfare an area where Coyle holds significant expertise.
Coyle noted that her diverse background provides a "strong foundation" for the responsibilities of command. This appointment is seen not only as a personal achievement but as a landmark shift for the nation’s defense force.
