BRUSSELS: The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational across 29 nations on Friday. Since its phased launch last October, the digital system has registered over 52 million crossings and refused entry more than 27,000 times.
Notably, nearly 700 individuals were identified as security threats to the Union. Replacing traditional passport stamps, the EES requires non-EU travelers to provide fingerprints and photos at automated kiosks to better track short-stay visits and tackle overstays.
While transport providers initially feared long delays, the European Commission reported that registration averages just 70 seconds. EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner stated the system allows the bloc to take full control of its borders.
