Colombo: Sri Lankan police have arrested Sagara Kariyawasam, General-Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party, over an alleged death threat directed at the nation's police chief.

The arrest followed remarks made by Kariyawasam during a press conference in Colombo, where he warned Inspector General Priyantha Weerasooriya that he could be killed if he remained partisan. Police formally treated the statement as a death threat, taking Kariyawasam into custody after recording his statement before producing him before a magistrate.

This high-profile detention represents the latest action against key associates of the formerly powerful Rajapaksa political dynasty. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s leftist administration, which assumed power in September 2024, promised an extensive crackdown on political bribery and graft.

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa currently faces allegations regarding scrapped Airbus purchase kickbacks. Additionally, several members of his immediate family face charges of money-laundering and stealing state funds.
