Lebanon to File Urgent UN Complaint Over Israeli Escalation

Following a Cabinet session at Baabda Palace, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam spoke to reporters, outlining two key decisions the government took.

The first decision was to submit an urgent complaint to the United Nations Security Council regarding what the government described as escalating Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The statement highlighted a significant increase in strikes on Wednesday, April 8, including attacks in the capital, Beirut, that resulted in numerous civilian casualties.

The government said this escalation defies ongoing regional and international efforts to halt hostilities in the region. It further accused the attacks of violating principles of international law and international humanitarian law, adding that they represent a continued and serious breach of these rules.

The second decision, grounded in the National Accord Document (the Taif Agreement) and related Cabinet resolutions, focuses on internal security and state authority. To safeguard citizens, their security, and property, the Cabinet instructed the Lebanese Army and internal security forces to immediately strengthen state control across the Beirut Governorate.

The directive also calls for restricting weapons exclusively to legitimate state authorities, enforcing laws more strictly, and taking all necessary measures against violators, who will be referred to the competent judiciary.
