BRASÍLIA: Brazilian federal police have carried out the largest marijuana seizure in the country’s history after a sniffer dog discovered approximately 48 tons of the drug hidden in a truck. The record-breaking bust occurred on Wednesday in the western state of Mato Grosso do Sul, a region that borders Paraguay and is frequently used as a transit point for international narcotics trafficking.
The operation began when officers stopped a truck for a routine inspection. A specialized police dog alerted handlers to the presence of illicit substances within the vehicle’s cargo area. Upon further investigation, authorities uncovered the massive shipment, which was concealed beneath a load of corn.
Police officials noted that the sheer scale of the seizure represents a significant blow to the financial resources of organized crime groups operating in the region.
The driver of the truck was arrested at the scene and faces charges related to international drug trafficking. This operation surpasses previous records in Brazil and highlights the ongoing efforts of federal authorities to intercept large-scale shipments entering the country through its porous land borders. The seized marijuana has been transported to a secure location for weighing and subsequent destruction.
