Ukraine Says Russia Fired Hundreds of Drones, Missiles in ‘Massive’ Daytime Attack

Ukraine faced a ‘massive’ daytime aerial assault as Russia fired nearly 500 drones and missiles across the country on Friday. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that the barrage, consisting of approximately 400 drones and dozens of missiles, was a deliberate attempt to maximise civilian casualties by striking in broad daylight.
The intensity of the attack forced the national grid operator, Ukrenergo, to implement emergency power outages in several regions as energy infrastructure faced severe strain.
The Kyiv region was a primary target, where local officials confirmed at least one fatality and eight injuries following strikes on the satellite towns of Bucha, Fastiv, and Obukhiv. The barrage also hit a veterinary clinic, resulting in the deaths of roughly 20 animals.
Ukrainian Air Force spokespeople noted that the assault utilised strategic bombers, including Tu-95s and Tu-160s, marking one of the most significant aerial escalations in recent months.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes as Moscow’s ‘brutal response’ to Ukraine’s proposals for an Easter ceasefire, with the holiday scheduled for April 12. While air defences intercepted a large portion of the incoming threats, the sheer volume of the assault caused widespread damage to residential buildings.
