US Republicans announce deal to end partial government shutdown

WASHINGTON: Republican congressional leaders announced a breakthrough agreement on Thursday, April 2, 2026, aimed at ending the 47-day partial government shutdown that has primarily paralysed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The deal, reached after weeks of stalemate, focuses on restoring funding to critical agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the U.S. Coast Guard, which have seen thousands of employees working without pay since mid-February.

The proposed legislation would fund approximately 94% of the DHS through the end of the 2026 fiscal year. To secure the agreement, Republican leadership agreed to decouple the funding fight from the ‘Save America Act’ , a controversial voter identification bill and omit immediate new funding for the core deportation operations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

While the plan includes provisions for body cameras and identification for immigration officers, it does not yet include the comprehensive ‘active euthanasia’ or ‘masking’ bans demanded by some factions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson indicated the bill would be brought to the floor under a suspension of rules to expedite passage and avoid further travel disruptions at national airports.
