SALT LAKE CITY: A Utah man has been taken into custody following a violent standoff with FBI agents, stemming from social media posts in which he allegedly threatened to assassinate President Donald Trump.

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Gary Thompson, was apprehended Wednesday after a tense confrontation at his residence involving a tactical team and a brief standoff where the suspect was armed with a sword.

According to the federal indictment, Thompson had been under investigation since late 2025 following a series of graphic Facebook posts detailing plans to harm the President during an upcoming visit to the region. The criminal complaint alleges that Thompson posted specific threats, including images of firearms and a ‘manifesto’ regarding the administration's policies in the Middle East.

When federal agents arrived to execute a search warrant, Thompson reportedly brandished a decorative sword and barricaded himself inside his home for several hours before negotiators and a flashbang deployment led to his surrender. He now faces multiple federal charges, including making threats against the President and assaulting a federal officer.
