UAE Calls for Accountability as Arab League Condemns Iranian Attacks

The United Arab Emirates has called for holding Iran accountable for what it described as ongoing “terrorist aggression” against Arab nations, stressing that accountability is essential to deter further escalation in the region.

The remarks were made by Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar, who led the UAE delegation at the 165th ordinary session of the Arab League Ministerial Council, held virtually on March 29, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the session, the UAE formally handed over the presidency of the previous 164th session to Bahrain. The meeting concluded with a joint declaration condemning what it described as Iranian attacks targeting the security and sovereignty of several Arab countries.

Critical Phase for Joint Arab Action

Al Marar highlighted that the region is undergoing a sensitive and critical phase in joint Arab cooperation, noting that February 28, 2026, marked a dangerous turning point in the geopolitical and strategic landscape of the Arab world.

He stated that Iranian attacks—carried out using ballistic missiles and suicide drones—continue to target civilian infrastructure, including ports, airports, residential neighborhoods, energy facilities, water desalination plants, and diplomatic missions. These attacks, he said, have resulted in civilian casualties of various nationalities.

Call for Deterrence and International Action

The UAE official emphasized that Iran’s actions constitute a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as a serious threat to regional and global peace and security.

He stressed that:

  • Holding Iran accountable for its actions is essential to prevent further aggression
  • Attempts by Iran to pressure countries in the region are unacceptable and must be confronted
  • Arab states retain the right to self-defense under international law

Al Marar also urged Iran to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), adopted on March 11, 2026, which condemned the attacks and reaffirmed the right of affected countries to defend themselves.

UAE Position: Restraint but Readiness

He noted that the UAE has exercised maximum restraint in responding to the attacks but remains fully prepared to defend its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

“The UAE will not tolerate any threat to its people, residents, or infrastructure,” he said, reaffirming the country’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Strait of Hormuz and Economic Impact

Al Marar warned that Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz—including threats to commercial shipping—pose a serious violation of international maritime law and a major risk to global trade, energy security, and supply chains.

He described any attempt to block the vital waterway as economic terrorism, with consequences extending beyond the region to the global economy, particularly affecting developing nations.

Push for Unified Arab Position

The UAE called on Arab countries to adopt a unified and firm stance against Iranian actions and to intensify diplomatic efforts in international forums to ensure accountability.

Al Marar also urged support for referring the situation to the UN Security Council under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to prevent further escalation and safeguard maritime navigation.

Tribute to Victims

In his remarks, Al Marar paid tribute to members of the armed forces and civilians who lost their lives in the attacks, stating that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and will remain a guiding force in efforts to protect the nation.

Looking Ahead

He expressed confidence in Bahrain’s leadership of the current Arab League session, affirming the UAE’s full support during what he described as an exceptional and sensitive phase for the region.

The UAE reiterated its long-standing commitment to regional stability, development, and coexistence, but stressed that continued Iranian actions require a comprehensive response, including addressing its missile and drone programs, as well as threats to international trade routes.
