Washington D.C.: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said U.S. forces carried out a large-scale precision strike on Kharg Island in Iran, destroying more than 90 Iranian military targets.
In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the overnight operation targeted naval mine storage facilities, missile storage bunkers and several other military installations on the island. U.S. forces said the strikes were conducted while preserving the island’s oil infrastructure.
“Last night, U.S. forces executed a large-scale precision strike on Kharg Island, Iran. The strike destroyed naval mine storage facilities, missile storage bunkers, and multiple other military sites. U.S. forces successfully struck more than 90 Iranian military targets on Kharg Island, while preserving the oil infrastructure,” the CETCOM tweet read.
Kharg Island is strategically important because it serves as Iran’s main oil export hub, handling a large share of the country’s crude shipments from the Persian Gulf.
The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which has intensified across the region in recent weeks. Officials said the strikes were aimed specifically at military assets rather than economic infrastructure.
According to reports, the operation destroyed key military facilities linked to missile storage and naval mining operations, capabilities that could threaten shipping in the nearby Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
Despite the scale of the attack, the island’s oil terminals and export facilities were left intact, a move analysts say may have been intended to avoid triggering a major disruption in global oil markets.
The strike comes amid rising regional tensions and warnings from Iranian officials of potential retaliation against U.S. and allied interests across the Middle East.
