Beirut: An Israeli airstrike on a health centre in southern Lebanon has killed 12 medical workers, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health said, as fighting continues to escalate in the region.

The attack late on Friday targeted a facility in the village of Burj Qalaouiyah in the Bint Jbeil District, killing doctors, paramedics and nurses who were on duty at the time, the ministry said.

Lebanese authorities said the strike was part of continuing attacks by Israel amid a broader regional conflict that intensified after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said the incident followed another Israeli strike hours earlier on a paramedic centre in the southern village of Souaneh, which killed two paramedics and injured five others.

According to Lebanese officials, Israeli attacks have killed at least 18 paramedics among the 773 people reported dead in Lebanon since hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel reignited on March 2.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (Lebanon) also reported that four people were killed in an Israeli air raid on Taamir Haret Saida in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah said it carried out several military operations on Friday, including the launch of suicide drones targeting Israeli troops in the northern Israeli town of Ya’ara.

The group also reported firing rockets at Israeli forces in the southern Lebanese towns of Kfar Kila and Khiam.

Late on Friday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the group was prepared for a prolonged confrontation with Israel.

“This is an existential battle, not a limited or simple battle,” he said, signalling that the conflict could continue to escalate.
