US Sinking of Iranian Warship Raises Concerns for India

The sinking of an Iranian warship by a U.S. submarine in international waters has raised concerns in India, with analysts suggesting the incident could affect New Delhi’s regional standing.
Sri Lanka’s foreign minister identified the vessel as the IRIS Dena, which had recently departed an eastern Indian port after participating in joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy. The frigate was reportedly on its way back to Iran when it was attacked in the Indian Ocean. More than 80 people have been confirmed killed.
The attack occurred thousands of kilometres from the Gulf region, where the United States and Israel have been carrying out strikes against Iran, prompting retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Tehran.
It also marked the first time a U.S. attack submarine has used a torpedo to sink a combat ship since the end of World War II in 1945.
Analysts say the incident could be sensitive for India because the strike happened in waters considered strategically important to New Delhi, shortly after the vessel had visited an Indian port.
Sushant Singh, a lecturer in South Asian Studies at Yale University, said the sinking could be seen as a challenge to India’s regional credibility, noting that the vessel had just taken part in an Indian fleet review and was travelling through waters within India’s sphere of influence.
He added that the development raises concerns about India’s key priorities in the region, including protecting maritime trade routes, avoiding deeper involvement in the U.S.–Iran confrontation, and preventing military actions by outside powers near its maritime periphery.
India has not yet officially commented on the incident.
