UAE Intercepts Aerial Threat; Death Toll at Two as Flights for Drones, Gliders Suspended

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Defence said UAE air defence systems intercepted and destroyed a new wave of Iranian missiles and drones launched towards the country. Debris fell in parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Abu Dhabi Airports confirmed that debris from an intercepted drone targeting Zayed International Airport caused the death of one Asian national and injured seven others. Authorities said one person injured in a previous incident died yesterday, bringing the overall death toll to two.

Separately, Dubai Airports said a concourse at Dubai International Airport sustained minor damage in an incident that was quickly contained. Four staff members were injured and received medical attention. The Dubai Media Office said most terminals had been cleared earlier under contingency plans.

In another development, Dubai Civil Defence brought under control a minor fire on the exterior façade of the Burj Al Arab. Authorities said it was caused by debris from an intercepted drone. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) issued a directive suspending all flight permits for gliders, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and recreational aircraft for one week, effective immediately. The authority said the move was taken in light of prevailing circumstances to ensure public safety and protect national airspace.

During the suspension period, the operation or launch of such aircraft is strictly prohibited. The GCAA said it will review the situation at the end of the week to determine whether to resume operations or extend the ban, stressing that violations will face legal action.

The Ministry of Defence described the targeting as a violation of national sovereignty and international law, affirming the UAE’s right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its territory and people. Officials urged the public to rely only on verified, official sources for updates and to avoid spreading rumours.
