Trump Orders Declassification of UFO, Extraterrestrial Life Records

Washington : President Donald Trump on Thursday instructed the United States Department of War and other federal departments to begin identifying and making public government files connected to UFOs, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and any matter touching on “alien and extraterrestrial life.” The announcement was made in a post on his social media platform, where he described the issue as attracting “tremendous interest.”
In his message, Trump called on Pete Hegseth, Secretary of War, and other agency leaders to start the process of locating and releasing relevant documents, including any supplementary material that could illuminate these subjects. He said the information is “highly complex, but extremely interesting and important.”
The directive follows renewed public curiosity over UFOs and unexplained aerial sightings, as well as recent comments by former Barack Obama suggesting in a podcast that extraterrestrial life is statistically likely even if no confirmed contact exists. Trump later accused Obama of accidentally revealing classified information, though he offered no evidence to support the claim.
Officials have previously reported that hundreds of UAP encounters have been logged by military and civilian sources over recent years; thorough reviews by Pentagon programs have found most observations to have earthly explanations, and none have confirmed proof of alien visitation. Nonetheless, Washington’s push to release files signals a new chapter in transparency on this topic.
Trump’s announcement drew a range of reactions in Congress, with some lawmakers welcoming greater openness and others cautioning about the release of sensitive information. Observers said publication of decades of UFO-related records could satisfy long-standing public fascination while also testing how much the government is willing to disclose about national security matters.
While the president has not specified exactly what material will be declassified or when it will be published, the move has already renewed discussion about government secrecy, scientific inquiry into life beyond Earth, and how agencies balance classified data with public interest.
