3.5 Tonnes a Day: EKFC’s Biodigester Reduces Landfill Waste
At Emirates Flight Catering, sustainability is taking flight. EKFC has introduced one of the largest commercial-scale biodigesters — the Power Knot LFC-3000 — at its Central Commissary Unit. This innovative system processes organic waste on-site, turning it into reusable grey water instead of sending it to landfill.
The biodigester works through natural aerobic digestion, using oxygen, heat, and microorganisms. Unlike mechanical systems, it becomes more efficient over time, handling a wider variety of waste as its microbial culture grows.
Shahreyar Nawabi, EKFC CEO, says, “Treating waste responsibly, diverting it from landfill, and putting it back to productive use is where we can make the greatest difference. This biodigester is a major milestone in our sustainability journey, driven by collaboration across the business and dedicated teams on the ground.”
Since its launch in December 2025, the system now handles up to 3.5 tonnes of food waste daily, with plans to reach 6 tonnes. Diverting this waste could prevent over 2,000 tonnes of CO₂e each year — a big win for the environment.
The biodigester is part of EKFC’s wider sustainability strategy, which includes solar energy, electric vehicles, and a first-of-its-kind electric hi-loader, all shaping a greener future for aviation catering.
