Pomas: A powerful tornado has struck the south-western French village of Pomas, injuring 41 people and causing extensive structural damage to roughly 300 homes.
Emergency services deployed over 120 rescue personnel to the scene after gale-force winds reaching 117 km/h tore through the area. Hospital officials confirmed that 15 people required urgent medical treatment, including a pregnant woman rescued from a collapsed house. The extreme weather event forms part of a severe storm system that has triggered orange alerts across south-west France, causing widespread power outages that left nearly 2,800 homes without electricity across 10 villages.
The severe weather also caused substantial infrastructure disruption, leading to flight delays across major French airports including Paris, Bordeaux, and Marseille. Regional authorities were additionally forced to cancel the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana cycling race after severe hailstorms swept through the nearby French Pyrenees.
