Maradona Death Trial Disrupted by Father-Son Medical Test Mix-Up

Buenos Aires: Argentine health insurance company Swiss Medical has admitted that clinical tests presented as evidence in the trial surrounding Diego Maradona's death actually belonged to his late father, Diego Salustiano Maradona.

In a formal letter confirmed on Monday, the healthcare provider acknowledged that the records remained mistakenly catalogued under the football legend's name. The blunder was uncovered by a defence lawyer representing one of seven medical professionals on trial over Maradona’s November 2020 death from heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema. A key expert witness, a nephrologist who analyzed Maradona's kidney health as a core element of the prosecution's case, had unknowingly relied on the father's 2015 laboratory results.

The revelation forced a temporary one-week suspension of the court proceedings, marking another significant setback for the trial after the initial hearing collapsed last year due to a judge's conflict of interest. Prosecutors have maintained that the error will not derail their case, ordering searches of medical facilities to secure the correct documentation before hearings resume on 27 August.
