Cuban President Rejects U.S. Threat After Venezuela Leader’s Capture

Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz‑Canel strongly rejected threats from U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, saying Cuba will defend itself after the United States carried out a military action in nearby Venezuela.

President Trump has sharply increased pressure on Cuba since U.S. forces captured Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro in early January. Trump warned Cuba that it must negotiate with the United States or face consequences, and said Venezuelan oil and financial support to Havana will stop.

In response, Díaz‑Canel posted on the social media platform X that “Cuba is a free, independent and sovereign nation” and that no foreign power can tell Cuba what to do. He added that Cuba is ready to defend its homeland “to the last drop of blood.”

The Cuban leader’s comments come amid rising tensions between Washington and Havana, with Cuba condemning the U.S. action in Venezuela as an attack on a peaceful nation and a violation of international law.

The dispute highlights growing regional unease following the U.S. operation in Caracas, which has drawn reactions from governments around the world and intensified debate over sovereignty and foreign intervention.
