Trump Says US Must Control Greenland to Counter China and Russia

Washington, D.C.: US President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial stance that the United States must acquire control of Greenland to prevent strategic rivals Russia and China from gaining influence over the Arctic territory, according to statements he made on Friday.

Trump outlined his views during a White House meeting with oil executives focused on investment in Venezuela, where he also addressed a range of foreign policy topics, including security guarantees for U.S. companies operating in the region.

The president argued that Greenland’s strategic location between North America and Europe makes its control vital to U.S. national security. He said the United States currently maintains a military presence on the island under a 1951 defence agreement with Denmark, but insisted that full ownership would better protect against potential Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic.

Trump suggested that the U.S. would seek a deal with Denmark to transfer sovereignty, but hinted that the administration is open to other options if necessary. The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from European leaders, who have reaffirmed that Greenland’s future is a matter for the Danish and Greenlandic governments.

In addition to geopolitical concerns, Trump addressed broader regional issues, including Venezuela’s transition after the U.S. seizure of President Nicolás Maduro, and defended providing security guarantees to U.S. investors in the country.

The remarks come amid ongoing debate over America’s foreign policy direction and its approach to great-power competition in key regions such as the Arctic and Latin America.
