Israel Resumes Airstrikes in Lebanon Citing Hezbollah and Hamas Presence

The Israeli military initiated a new wave of airstrikes against what it identified as Hezbollah and Hamas "military infrastructure" in eastern and southern Lebanon on Monday, January 6, 2026. The operation began shortly after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued urgent evacuation orders for four specific villages: Hammara and Ain el-Tineh in the Bekaa Valley, and Kfar Hatta and Aanan in the south. These strikes mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, occurring despite a US-brokered ceasefire reached in 2024 that was intended to end the prolonged and destructive conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Since the enactment of that truce, the peace has been increasingly fragile, with both sides frequently accusing the other of violating the agreement's terms. The current strikes come amid mounting pressure from both Israel and the United States for the Lebanese government to forcibly disarm Hezbollah. Lebanese officials now fear that Israel is utilizing these military actions as a coercive tactic to accelerate the confiscation of the group's arsenal, raising concerns that the situation could spiral into a broader military campaign across the already battered nation.
