42 Indian Umrah Pilgrims Feared Dead in Saudi Bus–Tanker Collision

A spiritual pilgrimage turned into a scene of devastation early Monday after a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims from Makkah to Madinah collided with a diesel tanker, erupting into a massive fireball, according to local media reports.

Initial figures indicate at least 42 people are feared dead, many of them believed to be women and children from Hyderabad. Unofficial sources suggest the victims may include 11 women and 10 children, though Saudi authorities are still working to confirm the exact toll.

India Sets Up Emergency Helpline

In response to the tragedy, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah has established a 24x7 emergency control room to assist affected families.

The consulate announced the step on social media, assuring families that updates will be provided as rescue and verification efforts continue.

India’s Leadership Reacts

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed “deep shock” over the accident, confirming that both the Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah are extending all possible support.

“Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,”

The Telangana government also said it is coordinating with Indian diplomats. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed officials in New Delhi to remain in close contact with embassy authorities for timely assistance.

Eyewitness Accounts and Local Connections

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi stated that 42 pilgrims were onboard when the bus caught fire. He said he is in continuous contact with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, who confirmed that detailed information from Saudi authorities is being gathered.

Owaisi urged the central government to ensure the repatriation of the bodies and to arrange proper medical treatment for survivors.

A Nation in Mourning

What began as a serene journey to one of Islam’s holiest cities has plunged families across Telangana—and India—into grief. As authorities identify victims and support the injured, the country awaits further clarity on one of the deadliest incidents involving Indian Umrah pilgrims in recent years.
