Washington DC: US President Donald Trump showed off a giant new granite helicopter landing pad on the White House South Lawn Wednesday, marking his latest construction project.
Trump explained that the granite pad was necessary to prevent incoming, updated versions of the Marine One helicopter from burning or damaging the historic grass.
The former real estate developer confirmed he ordered the initial construction redone due to an improper slope, targeting completion before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit on September 24.
During an impromptu press tour, Trump signed a stone slab featured in the pad, which is styled as a replica of the presidential seal.
The helipad project forms part of a broader, controversial overhaul of Washington that includes a disputed $600 million East Wing ballroom complex featuring an underground bunker and drone port.
