As Israel Election Nears, Netanyahu Turns Focus to Turkey

Jerusalem: As Israel's October 27 election approaches, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sees Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as major security challenges. His administration has increased warnings about Turkey's rising military influence in Syria, positioning Ankara at the forefront of Netanyahu's security-focused campaign messaging.
On Tuesday, Israel launched an airstrike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria, after Netanyahu said Damascus was preparing to allow Turkish troops to deploy there. Netanyahu stated that Israel had frequently warned Turkey against such a move before deciding to act. Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, accused Erdogan of dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria.
The conflict comes amid a serious decline in Israel-Turkey ties since the Hamas war. Erdogan has been a strong opponent of Netanyahu and allowed Hamas officials to operate from Turkey. Also, Turkey has stopped trade with Israel. Turkey is a NATO member and has close ties with US President Donald Trump, limiting any direct escalation for Israel.
