SEOUL: North Korea fired approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area on Thursday, according to South Korea's military.

The missile tests occurred just hours after US President Donald Trump publicly announced plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.

The launches coincided with shortened US-South Korea joint military exercises, which were scaled back by about a week following a direct suggestion from the US side.

Despite the missile activity, Kim Yo Jong confirmed her brother retains positive feelings toward Trump, though she stated no active communication is currently taking place.

Trump's sudden push for diplomacy and the reduced scope of military drills have raised significant security concerns among Asian allies.
