Kyiv: Russian forces launched a huge missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, killing at least nine people and injured 23, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes began shortly after midnight on Thursday and affected more than a dozen locations throughout the capital.
Residential structures, a children's hospital, a school, and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, while fires broke out at warehouses and industrial facilities. In one neighbourhood, the upper levels of a nine-story residential building collapsed, and emergency services looked for persons who possibly have been trapped under the debris.
The strike used ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, putting Kyiv on extended air-raid alert. Rescue teams worked throughout the early hours as authorities warned that death figures could rise. Later reports showed that the death toll increased as more bodies were found.
The latest strikes come as Russia and Ukraine intensify their long-range attacks, with Kyiv still under pressure from Russia's missile campaign and a dearth of air-defense interceptors.
