BERLIN: Germany recorded approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths this summer as Europe endured a series of severe heatwaves, according to official government data.

The high mortality total surpasses the country's previous peak of 8,900 heat-related fatalities recorded in 2018, public health figures show.

Data from the Robert Koch Institute indicates that nearly 9,600 of the deaths took place during a single week in late June when temperatures exceeded 40°C.

The public health authority reported that individuals aged 75 and older accounted for the largest share of the fatalities.

While direct causes like heatstroke accounted for some deaths, most resulted from extreme heat compounding pre-existing health conditions, requiring statistical estimation methods to calculate the full impact.
