Abu Dhabi Chamber Strengthens Economic Ties with Balkan Chambers of Commerce
The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted a high-level delegation from the Balkan Chambers of Commerce to explore new avenues for trade, investment, and long-term economic cooperation. The expanded meeting, held at the Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi, brought together senior representatives from both sides to strengthen bilateral relations and support sustainable growth.
The talks focused on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, developing joint projects, and opening new markets that would serve mutual interests. Both sides emphasized the importance of building long-term partnerships to drive sustainable growth and diversify economic opportunities.
The meeting was attended by H.E. Ali Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Chamber, alongside representatives from national institutions and the private sector. The Balkan delegation included heads of chambers of commerce from Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Croatia, the Balkans–Americas network, and the Western Balkans Chambers Investment Forum (WB6 CIF).
Expanding Trade Relations
Trade between the UAE and the Balkan region has grown steadily, with non-oil trade reaching $1.9 billion in 2024 at an annual growth rate of 8.7% over the past five years. Imports from the Balkans totaled $1.3 billion, largely comprising wheat, timber, and pharmaceuticals, while UAE non-oil exports—mainly aluminum and iron—grew at an impressive 20.5% CAGR, with Albania, Romania, and Croatia among the top destinations.
Re-exports also rose by 9%, driven by the automotive and technology sectors, underscoring the growing role of Abu Dhabi as a strategic gateway for regional and global trade.
Abu Dhabi’s Global Role
Speaking at the meeting, H.E. Al Marzouqi highlighted Abu Dhabi’s emergence as a global hub for business and investment, supported by a diversified economy and world-class business environment.
“This meeting reflects our commitment to building strategic international partnerships,” he said. “The Balkan markets represent a promising opportunity for expanding UAE exports and fostering greater cooperation across vital sectors such as renewable energy, technology, advanced industries, and the knowledge economy.”
He noted that the Chamber’s 2025–2028 Roadmap will further empower entrepreneurs and SMEs, contributing to economic diversification and strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global destination for investment.
A New Phase of Cooperation
Valentina Marku, Chairwoman of the Albanian Business Council in Abu Dhabi and Head of the Balkan delegation, described the visit as the beginning of “a new phase of cooperation” with the UAE.
“The Balkan countries view Abu Dhabi as a strategic partner and an attractive investment destination,” she said. “We look forward to expanding cooperation in agriculture, clean energy, healthcare, and technology, benefiting from the UAE’s experience in building a diversified and sustainable economy.”
Exploring Key Sectors
Presentations were delivered by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office and the Emirates Development Bank, showcasing the emirate’s advanced business ecosystem and investment opportunities. Discussions covered a wide range of fields, including advanced industries, renewable energy—particularly solar power—digital technologies such as blockchain and AI, biotechnology, and food and water security.
Long-Term Partnerships
Both parties agreed that the meeting laid the foundation for long-term partnerships, with plans to translate discussions into tangible projects and investments. The Balkan delegation praised Abu Dhabi’s favorable investment climate, while Chamber officials reiterated that such collaborations reflect effective economic diplomacy and integration.
