An international flotilla carrying humanitarian aid was preparing to leave Greek waters for Gaza on Friday, despite strong opposition from Israel.

The “Global Sumud Flotilla,” made up of about 50 civilian boats, aims to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. On board are lawyers, parliamentarians, activists, and Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Organisers said the flotilla had faced a drone attack earlier this week, though no injuries were reported. Italy and Spain have since deployed naval ships to assist their citizens and other Europeans taking part.

Greece has promised safe passage within its territory, but once in international waters, the flotilla faces heightened risk. Organisers hope to reach Gaza early next week.

Israel has warned it will not allow the boats to pass, accusing the mission of supporting Hamas. Officials suggested the aid be handed over through Israel instead. The flotilla, however, blames Israel for the drone strike and insists it is “trying to deliver hope and solidarity.”
One of the lead boats suffered a mechanical issue on Friday, delaying departure, but organisers said preparations were continuing.
