Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House marked “meaningful progress” on a number of bilateral and regional issues. It was the first meeting between the two leaders in six years.
The talks focused on defense cooperation and trade, though Erdogan did not mention Turkey’s purchases of Russian oil or U.S. fighter jets, which were among the key topics on the agenda.
Erdogan described the discussion as productive, saying they explored ways to boost trade, including revising customs duties, in order to reach a $100 billion target. “It’s impossible to solve every issue in one meeting, but this meeting achieved progress on many fronts,” he said.
Following the talks, Turkish Airlines announced a major deal with Boeing, including an order for 75 Boeing 787 aircraft and finalized negotiations for 150 Boeing 737 MAX planes, pending engine agreements.
Erdogan said he left the White House “happy” with the outcome of the discussions.
