Eight leaders and ministers from Arab and Islamic states issued a unified call to end the war in Gaza during talks with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session yesterday.

The leaders of Qatar, Jordan, Turkiye, Indonesia and Pakistan, along with Egypt’s prime minister and the foreign ministers of the UAE and Saudi Arabia, stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire and immediate humanitarian access to the besieged enclave.

They warned of the “humanitarian catastrophe and high human toll” in Gaza, where more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.

Serious consequences

The leaders also rejected any forced displacement of Palestinians, describing the war as a conflict with “serious consequences for the region and impact on the Muslim world.”

In their joint appeal, they called for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, alongside the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid, as the first step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.

They also underscored their commitment to rebuilding Gaza, urging the creation of a comprehensive reconstruction plan with security arrangements and international support for the Palestinian Authority in its reform efforts.

The leaders further emphasised the importance of protecting Jerusalem’s holy sites and preserving stability in the occupied West Bank, where violence by Israeli settlers has escalated since late 2023.

The high-level meeting was co-hosted by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad AlThani, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Kamal Madbouly, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
