Drone From Yemen Hits Arrivals Hall at Israel’s Ramon Airport

The Israeli Airports Authority confirmed on Sunday that a drone launched from Yemen struck the arrivals hall at Ramon Airport, near the Red Sea city of Eilat. Takeoffs and landings were halted as authorities worked to quickly restore safe operations.

The Israeli military said the incident remains under investigation, without confirming whether the drone was intercepted or directly hit the airport. Ramon Airport, located near the resort city of Eilat on the borders of Jordan and Egypt, mainly serves domestic flights.

The attack comes amid ongoing tensions, with Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen launching drones and missiles toward Israel, claiming solidarity with Palestinians. Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the port of Hodeidah, where recent operations killed senior Houthi officials.

While security is the immediate concern, aviation and sustainability experts highlight that repeated disruptions of airports and air travel also have long-term impacts: increased fuel consumption due to rerouted flights, higher carbon emissions, and added strain on regional aviation infrastructure. Ensuring resilient and sustainable airport operations in conflict zones has become an urgent challenge.
