The European Union said Thursday it is working around the clock to help countries battling wildfires across the continent.
Extreme summer heat, worsened by human-driven climate change, has fueled fires in Greece, Portugal, Spain, and parts of the Balkans.
“Fighting wildfires is mainly the responsibility of each country, but we are here to support them,” EU spokeswoman Eva Hrncirova said. “We continue to work non-stop to assist affected countries through our civil protection mechanism.”
The EU’s civil protection system allows member states to provide help to other countries in need, with Brussels covering the costs of operations. Hrncirova said the mechanism has already been activated 16 times during this fire season.
