Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has firmly rejected any outside interference in his country’s internal affairs, following recent comments from Iran about plans to disarm Hezbollah.
Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with Iran’s visiting security chief Ali Larijani, Aoun described Tehran’s statements as “unconstructive.” He stressed that no one in Lebanon should be allowed to hold weapons or use foreign support as a source of power.
“It is forbidden for anyone to bear arms and to use foreign backing as leverage,” Aoun said, according to a statement released by the Lebanese presidency on X.
The remarks come amid growing political debate in Lebanon over the future of Hezbollah’s armed presence, an issue that has long fueled tensions both domestically and internationally.
