Passengers and a bus driver in New Zealand were shocked when a two-year-old girl was discovered alive inside a suitcase in the luggage compartment of a bus.
The incident happened on Sunday during a scheduled stop in Kaiwaka, about 60 miles north of Auckland. A passenger had asked the driver to open the luggage compartment, where the driver noticed movement coming from one of the bags.
When the suitcase was opened, the toddler was found inside. Police said she was “very hot” but otherwise appeared unharmed. She was immediately taken to hospital for a full medical check-up.
Authorities have not revealed how long the child was in the suitcase or the bus route at the time.
A 27-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with child neglect. Police said more charges could follow. She is expected to appear in court on Monday, and social services have been informed to ensure the child’s safety.
