Earthquake Felt in New York as Distant Quake Sends Minor Waves to California
New York City residents experienced a mild shake after a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck the suburb of Hasbrouck Heights, just 13 kilometers west of Central Park, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake, which occurred about 10 kilometers underground, was brief. “It felt like a slight sway for a moment,” said a Brooklyn resident, describing the tremor. No injuries or damage have been reported.
In a separate event, the U.S. Meteorological Service confirmed that minor tsunami waves reached California’s coast following a strong earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula earlier today.
Data from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center showed waves measuring between 20 and 30 centimeters along the U.S. West Coast. Officials said the waves caused no damage and posed no significant risk.
