Kerala’s Beloved ‘Two Rupee Doctor’ Passes Away at 80

Dr. A.K. Ryru Gopal, fondly known as the “Two Rupee Doctor” for his lifelong dedication to the poor, passed away on Sunday at the age of 80. His passing marks the end of an era for thousands of patients whose lives he touched with kindness and affordable care.

For over 50 years, Dr. Gopal treated the underprivileged, charging just Rs 2 per consultation for much of his career — a gesture that earned him his famous nickname. Even in recent years, his fee remained between Rs 40 and Rs 50, far below typical medical charges.

His journey into selfless service began decades ago, after witnessing the dire condition of a patient during a house call. The encounter inspired him to dedicate his life to making healthcare accessible, especially for daily wage earners, students, and those who could not afford medical treatment.

To accommodate workers’ schedules, Dr. Gopal would start seeing patients as early as 3am, sometimes attending to more than 300 people in a single day. At a time when healthcare has become increasingly commercial, he stood out as a rare symbol of compassion and integrity in the medical profession.

Dr. Gopal leaves behind a legacy of generosity and humanity, remembered not only for the lives he saved but for the hope and dignity he gave to those who had little else.
