Krasheninnikov Volcano Erupts for First Time in 600 Years in Russia’s Far East

Kamchatka, Russia – A rare volcanic eruption lit up the skies over Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula overnight, marking the first confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in six centuries.

Scientists say the eruption could be linked to the powerful earthquake that struck Russia’s Far East last week, which sent tsunami warnings as far as French Polynesia and Chile.

“This is the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years,” said Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team. She explained that the volcano’s last known lava flow dates back to around 1463.

Following the eruption, Russia’s emergency services reported an ash plume reaching 6,000 meters (3.7 miles) into the sky. The 1,856-meter-tall volcano is located in one of the world’s most volcanically active regions, home to several other erupting peaks, including Klyuchevskoy, Kamchatka’s most active volcano.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, but no immediate damage or injuries have been reported.
