Actress Julia Garner says she still believes the long-delayed Madonna biopic will eventually reach the big screen, insisting that “the movie has to get made,” according to People.
Garner, 32, was set to portray Madonna in the project, which has faced a troubled development. Universal Pictures stopped developing the biopic in 2023 after several script revisions, with writers including Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson. Madonna had also been attached to direct.
Madonna later said that telling her life story on the scale she envisioned required a substantial budget. “I’ve had an extraordinary life, I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget,” she told Interview in June 2026.
Garner was linked to the role in 2022 and had already begun extensive preparation when reports emerged in January 2023 that Universal was no longer developing the film.
Despite the setback, Garner has maintained her connection with Madonna. In December 2023, the Weapons star even joined Madonna on stage during a tour stop in Brooklyn.
