Google wants to put AI computing in space

What if the next AI data centre is in orbit? Google is exploring that idea through Project Suncatcher, a research effort investigating whether satellites equipped with its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) could run AI workloads in space.
Google plans to test prototype satellites in partnership with Planet, examining whether AI hardware can operate reliably in the harsh environment of orbit.
The project could eventually lead to networks of solar-powered satellites working together as an orbital computing system.
Space offers one major advantage: satellites in low Earth orbit can receive sunlight for much longer periods than solar panels on Earth, potentially providing abundant energy for AI processing.
However, significant challenges remain. Powerful AI chips generate substantial heat, and cooling electronics in the vacuum of space is difficult. Satellites would also need fast communication links to share data.
For now, Suncatcher remains experimental, but it could point toward a future where AI infrastructure extends beyond Earth.
