Netflix is developing "Ravenloft," a new live-action series based on the gothic horror setting of Dungeons & Dragons, bringing one of the franchise's darkest worlds to the screen.

The series is being developed by John August, who will write and executive produce, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón also serving as an executive producer alongside Hasbro Entertainment. The project is described as a prestige fantasy series blending adventure, gothic horror and tragic romance.

At the centre of the story is Strahd von Zarovich, the infamous vampire Darklord. The series will explore his transformation from a tragic antihero into one of the most notorious villains in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, touching on themes of power, love, obsession and his descent into undead existence.

The project represents a fresh attempt by Netflix to bring Dungeons & Dragons to television. The streamer had previously been developing a live-action series based on "The Forgotten Realms," but that project is no longer moving forward. Ravenloft is a separate production with a new creative team.

For fans of the franchise, the series could offer a darker alternative to traditional fantasy, focusing on supernatural horror and character-driven storytelling.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date, cast or production schedule for "Ravenloft."
