Man jailed for conning woman of cash and jewellery

A 39-year-old Bahraini man was sentenced to five years behind bars for conning a British woman of cash and jewellery.

The defendant, of Asian origin, is said to have got acquainted with the woman through a social media platform. He was working as a driver in a local perfumery, but told the 52-year-old woman that he knew senior government officials and could find her a job as a personal consultant to one of them.

And then he swindled her out of BD1,900 by using her credit card and two diamond rings, totally worth BD7,000.

"We were talking on a social media website, and then we exchanged contact details. We began dating and he used to come to my apartment where we slept together. He told me that he knew many senior officials, and I believed him because he was requesting me to keep silent when he was receiving calls. Then, he cheated me with the story that one of the officials asked him to find a personal consultant, and he had recommended me," the woman told prosecutors.

The 39-year-old man managed to get his hands on the victim's credit card while they were shopping.

"We were buying grocery, and he requested my credit card to make payment. Then, he kept it with him, and later I found out that he withdrew BD1,900 by using it. When I asked him why, he said that his mother was sick," she added.

The woman told the prosecutors that two diamond rings had disappeared from her home, pointing her fingers on the defendant.

The defendant was accused of fraud.
