Officials underline cooperation on security, diplomacy and FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations
Qatar and Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic dialogue mechanism between their foreign ministries, in a move Doha described as a reflection of the “deep and growing partnership” between the two countries.
The agreement was signed between Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, according to remarks by Jassim Mohammed Al-Asmakh, director of the U.S. Affairs Department at Qatar’s foreign ministry.
Al-Asmakh said the deal highlighted both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination across a range of sectors of mutual interest.
He said relations between Qatar and Canada span more than five decades and are built on “continuous coordination” between the leaderships of both nations, mutual respect and shared interests.
Al-Asmakh added that ties between Doha and Ottawa have steadily expanded in political, economic, security and development fields.
He also described Qatar as a “reliable partner” for Canada during times of crisis, citing ongoing political and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
The partnership includes coordination on efforts aimed at supporting regional and international security and stability, strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting diplomatic solutions to global crises, he said.
Al-Asmakh further noted Qatar’s willingness to share its organisational expertise with Canada ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which Canada will co-host alongside the United States and Mexico.
