Witnesses to be heard in bribe case on Dec 30

Defence witnesses will testify on December 30 in the trial of a prison guard accused of accepting bribe.

He reportedly facilitated the entry of a phone as well as nuts and Viagra pills to an inmate in Jaw Prison.

His illicit act came to light following a tip-off to police, and he was found to have received an iPhone 6, two Samsung phones and BD2370 from the inmate’s brother in exchange of smuggling the aforementioned items to him inside the jail.

According to court files, the prison guard, of Asian origin, was convinced by the inmate that he could bring his family to Bahrain.

He also promised him a house and a car if he smuggled the items to him.

The inmate and his brother are also standing trial in this case, after being charged of abetting the crime.

“I was upset a bit, and when the inmate saw me, he asked me why I was looking sad,” the guard told prosecutors earlier. “I told him I wasn’t feeling comfortable with my work in Jaw Prison. Then he told me that he had high influences and using it I can be shifted to another venue,” he added.

“He requested me to call his brother, who later gave me several phones and nuts to give him inside the jail. He also lured me by promising a house and a car,” the prison guard added.

The inmate denied knowing anything about his brother’s plans to smuggle the items inside the jail with the help of the guard.
