New state-of-the-art telecom towers on way in Bahrain

Manama : Bahrain will soon get rid of its unattractive cell phone towers with some cool looking state-of-the-art structures that would blend in easily with the environment around them.

Besides providing the desired visual impact, the new towers, according to Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), will address an “environmental public concern”.

Shared usage of towers, TRA said, will help reduce “the number of towers in the Kingdom”. The law also limits the replication of towers without operational need.

“All existing towers in the Kingdom will be gradually rectified within an appropriate period of time,” the statement added.

Operators’ requests for deploying such towers in various parts of the Kingdom are currently getting processed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), the authority said in a statement, yesterday.

Mohammed Alnoaimi, TRA Director of Technical & Operations, however, said that the authority would seek the “views of the general public about any new tower, which will be built in their neighbourhoods”.

He added: The authority would move ahead with the deployment only after considering people’s views and concerns in this regard.

Tower deployment also requires approval from Municipalities, Supreme Council of Environment, Civil Aviation Affairs and other relevant bodies.

“The new tower regulatory initiative is a real example of TRA’s effort and commitment to further enable the telecoms industry for deploying state of the art infrastructure and networks capable of delivering next-generation services. At the same time, it considers the visual impact of towers, addressing an environmental public concern,” said Mohammed Alnoaimi, TRA Director of Technical & Operations.

This, according to TRA, follows international practices in this regard and Prime Ministerial Decision No. 45 of 2015.

“The new regulatory framework focuses on the effective deployment of new telecommunications towers and developing existing ones according to new procedures and engineering specifications agreed upon,” the statement said.

The authority also revealed that it is currently working on an automated system for approving applications for telecommunications towers.
