Janahi claims a thriller win in BTA Junior Tennis championship

Manama  : On the second day of the Bahrain Tennis Academy (BTA) Junior Tennis yesterday at the Dilmun Sports Club in Saar, Marwan Janahi claimed the eight years and under title after coming from behind to defeat Ahmed Riyaan 2-7, 7-4, 7-3, while Taha Nasir claimed third place with a 7-3, 7-3 win over Aadya Raju.

In the semi-finals, Marwan Janahi came from behind to defeat Taha Nasir in three sets, while Ahmed defeated Aadya Raju in straight sets.

In the 10-and-under action, Rohan Mukherjee claimed the title against Rushikesh Sonawane after a tense final point which, due to the implementation of the “sudden-death” deuce, was match-point for both players. In the third place match Maro Ugarkovic beat Marwan Janahi 4-0.

The semi-finals saw Rushikesh defeat Marwan 4-0, while Rohan beat Maro Ugarkovic 4-0.

In the 12 years and under category, four groups of players competed in a round-robin competition. The two players who achieved the most wins in each group have qualified to compete in the quarter-finals which will be a traditional “knock-out” format.

They are - Erwin Godinho, Yousif Al-Shehabi, Owen Verbeek, James Blair, Fahad Al Madhi, Zayaan Siddiqi, Rohan Mukherjee, Hani Halawani.

BTA and Tournament Director, Dan Barrie said, “We saw some great matches and spectators commented on how impressed they were with the level of play from some of Bahrain’s best young players.”

Final rounds of the 12-and-under category and all rounds of the 14-and-under category will take place this Friday and Saturday.
