Protecting the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandeb emerged as a key focus of talks between His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Greek President Constantine An. Tassoulas in Athens, with both leaders stressing the importance of freedom of navigation and secure waterways.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Mansion during His Majesty’s visit to Greece, also focused on strengthening Bahrain-Greece relations and regional and international developments, particularly the situation in the Middle East.
The two leaders stressed that arrangements concerning the strategic waterways should comply with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, while protecting international trade and global supply chains.
President Tassoulas welcomed His Majesty, saying the visit would contribute significantly to advancing relations between the two countries.
His Majesty thanked the Greek President for the warm welcome and hospitality, expressing hope that the visit would open a new phase in bilateral relations.
Heritage
His Majesty highlighted the deep historical links between Bahrain and Greece, noting that Greek references to Bahrain as Tylos date back more than 23 centuries. He said the shared heritage of the Greek and Dilmun civilisations could provide a foundation for a modern partnership benefiting both peoples.
President Tassoulas expressed solidarity with Bahrain and condemned the attacks carried out by Iran against the Kingdom. He said the attacks had caused loss of life and infrastructure damage, with wider repercussions for the Gulf, Greece and other regions.
Greece supports freedom of navigation, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, under international law, President Tassoulas said. He also highlighted the Greek Navy's role in the Red Sea through Operation ASPIDES.
Meanwhile, His Majesty met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, highlighting the longstanding Bahrain-Greece relationship and the importance of further strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas of shared interest.
